So What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers the outer layer of a damaged tooth.  It can be made from a variety of strong, natural-looking materials like porcelain, zirconia, and ceramic. Unlike fillings or inlays, crowns reinforce the entire tooth structure, improving your dental function and protecting long-term oral health.

Do I Need a Dental Crown?

While it's possible to have tooth damage without even realizing it, many dental problems lead to visible and uncomfortable side effects. If you notice pain while chewing, redness or swelling of the gums, or abnormal sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, you should schedule a check-up at our downtown Chattanooga, TN, office. The sooner we examine your teeth, the earlier our dentists can diagnose and correct the problem before it gets worse.

Interested in Same-Day Treatment? Learn More About the Procedure

CEREC is a computer-aided design and manufacturing tool that allows us to make custom restorations right in the office rather than rely on outsourced production. Thanks to the CEREC same-day system, you can undergo treatment without a temporary crown, lengthy waiting period, or multiple appointments. The following steps take place in one streamlined visit:
Our practice is equipped with the cutting-edge CEREC system that can make a crown in less than an hour.

Tooth Prep

Before you can get a dental crown, we need to address your underlying dental health problem. This often involves a root canal procedure to remove bacteria and decay from the tooth's inner chamber.

After your preliminary treatment, we take detailed impressions of your teeth with 3D imaging technology and design your custom crown. The impressions and blueprints are immediately uploaded to our in-office CEREC milling machine.

The crown is carved to the exact dimensions of your tooth from dental-grade ceramic. Our dentists carefully color match the material to the shade of your natural teeth. In about an hour or less it is ready for placement.

Using strong dental adhesives, the permanent crown is bonded to the natural tooth.  Your dentist will check your bite and make any adjustments if necessary. Finally, the crown is cleaned and polished to perfection, and your treatment is complete.

What About Implant-Supported Crown Treatment?

If you are missing a tooth or need to get an extraction, dental implants are considered one of the best methods to restore your smile. While traditional dental bridges and crowns only repair the portion of the tooth above the gum line, implants replace the underlying roots. The implant is embedded in the jawbone where it becomes a permanent foundation for your custom restoration. To find out if you qualify for an implant-supported porcelain crown, schedule an appointment at our downtown Chattanooga dentist office today.

Is a Lab-Made Crown Right for Me?

While you can't beat the speed and convenience of a CEREC crown, there are still reasons to consider the traditional lab-made alternatives. Our trusted dental lab can craft your crown from a variety of materials that may be better suited for your smile. For example, if you are restoring a highly visible front tooth you may be happier with the aesthetics of a porcelain crown. Meanwhile, if you suffer from bruxism, we may recommend porcelain fused to a metal crown for increased durability.

It usually takes one to two weeks for the lab to complete your order. We will place a temporary crown over your tooth during your first visit and schedule you back to the office when the permanent crown is ready.

Depending on your needs, it can be worth the wait to customize the material of your dental crown. During your consultation at our downtown Chattanooga office, we will go over all your options and help you make an informed decision about your treatment.

Crowns made using our in-office CEREC system offer speed and convenience, but a lab-made crown may be a better option for some patients.

If you are looking for a great dental practice in Chattanooga, look no further! I typically avoid the dentist because I hate it so much. I finally decided to go and decided to check out River City Dentistry. Their location on Cowart St. is beautiful, super clean, and easy to find. The front desk staff is friendly and helpful. My dental hygienist, KJ, was stellar—probably my best dental cleaning experience in many years. I’m going to make sure I book with her each time. Dr. Armstrong is kind and knowledgeable. I feel very comfortable placing myself (and teeth) under the care of his practice.

As someone who has had many dental troubles since my first tooth as a toddler, I've been to many dentists over my lifetime. I recall most of them as terrible memories until I started coming to River City Dentistry. I've never stayed with one dentistry as long as I have with them (5+ years) and every visit there has been nothing short of outstanding. While they provide excellent dental care, I find their customer service to be unmatched! One of the workers there even messaged me on Facebook to check up on me after I had a shoulder surgery. They truly care for your entire well being in addition to your dental needs. I cannot recommend this dentistry enough!
