Benefits of Clear Aligners

/

Misaligned teeth can be embarrassing, and they can cause problems for your overall oral health. Plaque can be more difficult to clean from crowded, crooked, or poorly spaced teeth, which can lead to cavities and gum disease. Additionally, a misaligned bite can cause long-term problems for your jaw. Clear aligners are a simple solution in orthodontics that can alleviate these potential risks.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Clear Aligners?

Most anyone with misaligned teeth is a good candidate for Invisalign. However, more severe orthodontic issues will often require traditional braces. Our dentists will evaluate your overall oral health to recommend the right treatment option for you. An advancement in orthodontics, Invisalign has proven effective in addressing different types of malocclusion, including:

Overbite

Underbite

Gapped Teeth

Crowded Teeth

Open Bite

Crossbite

The Invisalign Process

Meeting with your dentist is always the first step in straightening your teeth.
Meeting with your dentist is always the first step in straightening your teeth.

Impressions and Imaging

Ours dentist will take X-rays, photographs, and impressions of your teeth to create a personalized treatment plan for your new smile. This documentation also allows us to provide you with a virtual preview of your smile at the end of Invisalign treatment.

Custom Aligners

From the impressions and imaging, our dentists will work with Invisalign to create your custom set of clear aligners. They will be custom made for your teeth and dental health needs. Each Invisalign aligner is designed to gradually move your teeth into proper alignment.

Wearing Your Aligners

You will wear each Invisalign aligner for about two weeks before moving to the next new aligner in your treatment plan. You should wear your aligners for about 22 hours per day to ensure your teeth are shifting into proper position.

Checkups

Our dentists will monitor your progress through checkups at our Chattanooga, TN, office every six weeks. The duration of your Invisalign treatment will depend on your individual needs, but most people can achieve their new smile in around 12 months.

How to Care for Your Aligners

The most important way to keep your Invisalign aligners clean is by keeping your mouth clean. Good dental practices like brushing twice daily and flossing once a day will keep your teeth and gums healthy during treatment. Below are more ways to ensure your teeth and aligners stay clean.

Knowing What You Should Use

The best way to clean your aligners is using the Invisalign Cleaning System. Otherwise, a denture cleaner is a great alternative to consider. A soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste can work, but be gentle to avoid scratching the clear aligners or leaving a cloudy residue.

Clean After Eating

After every meal or having a drink that's sugary or acidic, you should brush your teeth before putting your Invisalign aligner back in. This helps remove harmful residue that could be stuck on your teeth. If you are not able to brush your teeth, be sure to rinse your mouth with lukewarm water before reinserting your clear aligner.

Rinse with Cool or Lukewarm Water

Because Invisalign aligners are made of plastic, hot liquids could warp their shape. Misshapen aligners could cause issues and delays in your treatment plan, setting your progress back by weeks. Be sure to rinse and clean your clear aligners with cool or room temperature water.

Always Put Your Aligners in a Safe Space

When removing your aligners to eat or drink, be sure to put them in a safe place where they cannot get lost or damaged. If you happen to lose one of your aligners, reach out to our dental office as soon as possible. We can order a replacement while you wear your previous aligner in the meantime. Our team of dentists will help keep your Invisalign treatment on track.

It’a truly unbelievable to think that dental experience can be enjoyable, but remarkably Damien and his staff made it easy. From when you walk in the door to leaving you couldn’t feel more comfortable, and you feel it’s more of wellness visit than a normal mandatory visit. Compared to my last dentist I felt I was in a time warp with all of the use dated high tech dental equipment. IT WAS EASILY THE BEST DENTAL EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE.

I was very anxious about getting my wisdom teeth removed and had put it off far too long, but the staff put me right at ease. Before the procedure honestly felt kinda like being at a spa! I have felt minimal pain and have had minimal swelling. I will be going back for all future dental needs and would recommend this place to anyone

Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces

The biggest advantage of Invisalign over braces is that you do not have to feel self-conscious during treatment. The aligners are virtually invisible, letting your smile take center stage rather than brackets or wires.

Invisalign

Invisalign

Many patients in need of orthodontic care find that Invisalign is the option most compatible with their lifestyles. Since the aligners are removable, you are free to enjoy chewing gum, beef jerky, and other foods that would otherwise be off limits. Additionally, since the mouthpieces are made of smooth, custom-molded plastic, they are comfortable against the soft tissues of the mouth, making them more enjoyable to wear than the brackets that come with braces.

Traditional Braces

Braces

Metal braces are an effective orthodontic option, but they are not discreet. The brackets and wires are quite noticeable, and they can rub the inside of your mouth, irritating the lips, cheeks, and tongue. Braces also limit the kinds of foods you can eat. Eating certain foods while wearing braces can increase your risk of cavities and gum disease, and can even damage the brackets and wires. Always follow the advice of your dentist or orthodontist when wearing either Invisalign or braces.
